How to Solve Hard Sudoku Step by Step: 12 Proven Strategies

Naked Single (Sole Candidate)
When an empty cell shares a row, column, and 3Γ3 box with 8 distinct numbers, only 1 possible digit remains. That digit must go into that cell. Always start by scanning for cells with only one candidate left.
Hidden Single (Unique Placement)
A cell may have multiple notes, but within its specific row, column, or 3Γ3 box, a particular number (e.g. 7) can only fit into that single cell. The number is "hidden" among other notes, but its location is certain.
Pointing Pairs & Box-Line Reduction
If all candidate notes for a digit inside a 3Γ3 box are locked into a single row or column, that digit must appear in that box. Therefore, you can eliminate that digit candidate from the rest of that row or column outside the box.
Naked Pairs & Triples
When two cells in the same row, column, or block contain only the identical pair of candidates (e.g. [4, 9]), those two digits are locked into those two cells. You can safely erase [4, 9] from all other cells in that unit.
X-Wing Strategy
When a candidate appears in exactly two positions across two separate rows, and those positions align in the same two columns, they form a rectangle. The digit must be placed in one of the two diagonals, allowing you to eliminate the digit from the rest of those two columns.
